Risk of arb betting

Arbitrage betting carries several practical risks despite its theoretical risk-free nature. Bookmakers actively detect and restrict or ban accounts showing arbing patterns, limiting stake sizes or closing accounts entirely. Timing risk is significant: odds can shift between placing multiple bets, turning a guaranteed profit into a loss if one side is missed or delayed.
Calculation errors in stake sizing or overlooking different bookmaker rules (such as voided bets on abandoned matches) can erase the edge. Capital is often locked across multiple accounts, creating liquidity and withdrawal delays. Software or scanner failures may cause missed opportunities or incorrect bets. Additionally, regulatory and tax implications vary by jurisdiction, and repeated arbing can trigger enhanced scrutiny.
Successful arbers must manage these operational, technical, and account-level risks carefully, as even small mistakes quickly eliminate the thin margins that make arbitrage viable.
